Details

Plastic Coating - Two-part clear cold cure lacquer for use on wood, hardboard, cork and plastic laminates. Extremely good adhesion, resistant to heat, solvents and abrasion. Can be burnished to a mirror like gloss or rubbed down to a smooth, satin finish with steel wool and wax. An excellent finish for marquetry as it does not darken light coloured veneers and does not yellow or craze on ageing. Hard-dry within 2 hours of application.

Type

A two-part cold cure finish, based on Urea Formaldehyde resins, plasticised with alkyd and reinforced with melamine. The finish is highly durable, heat resistant, resistant to impact, abrasion and solvents.

Intended Use

Intended use bare wood, veneered wood, hardboard, MDF and unsealed cork. For interior use only.

Special Features

Enhances the colour of the wood. May be burnished to give mirror like finish using Rustins Burnishing Cream. The coating is almost colourless, but some woods may darken slightly.

Preparation

The surface must be clean, smooth, dry and free from wax, dust and contaminants. Nail holes and small cracks may be filled with Rustins Woodfiller. Bare wood may be dyed before coating with Rustins Wood Dye. Other brands of dye & stain should be tested for compatibility. Do not apply Knotting or Sanding Sealer.

Application

The mixing ratio is 1 part Hardener to 4 parts Coating by volume. Once mixed, it may be used for up to two days, if covered and kept cool. Use a brush, roller or lambs wool pad and apply evenly and liberally, finishing in the direction of the grain. For the Plastic Coating Oiled finish, the Plastic Coating and Hardener are mixed in the correct proportions. The same amount of Plastic Coating thinners are then added to the mix and mixed thoroughly. Three coats are then applied by rag wiping of any excess after each application. Allow 2hrs between coats.

Coats

Two coats are usually sufficient on hardwood. Softwoods and cork may require a minimum of 3 coats, depending on the absorbency of wood.

Drying Time

Generally touch-dry within 30 minutes–1 hour, depending on the temperature and humidity. Re-coating Time May be re-coated after 1 hour.

Application Temp

Ideally 15-25°C. Do not use below 15°C, or in conditions of high humidity.

Coverage

13-15 sq.m per litre per coat. This can vary depending on the absorbency of the wood.
